Kozlov Rob Castle above Tolmin

The Tolmin area is renowned for its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. Tolmin boasts three castle structures, each built for a different purpose, with their significance evolving over the centuries. Today, the ruins of Kozlov Rob Castle and the former Coronini Mansion – now home to the Tolmin Museum and its presentation of the Upper Soča Valley's cultural heritage – are open to the public. Meanwhile, the Manor at Na Doru remains an archaeological witness situated on private land.

On the exceptional strategic site of the Kozlov Rob hill, a mighty castle stood for over 500 years. One of the most important in the Primorska region, it was built no later than the 12th century. The hilltop offered control over the Tolmin basin and its passages as far back as the Iron Age and Roman times. Kozlov Rob reached its "castle peak" in the 16th century. Battles for conquest, changing owners, earthquakes, fires, the introduction of firearms, and social shifts continuously altered its appearance until it was abandoned in the mid-17th century.

Part of the castle ruins has been transformed into an Interpretation Centre. Alongside the Tolmin Museum’s permanent exhibition, it offers a unique experience of the castle’s and Tolmin’s development through a multimedia presentation in an "immersive room." Added value is provided by a game-based experience designed for families and a guided tour program called "The Path of the Three Castle Buildings," which explores the heritage of Kozlov Rob, the Coronini Mansion, and the Manor of the Patriarch of Aquileia at Na Doru.

Beyond the breathtaking views of the Tolmin basin, Kozlov Rob offers so much more – inviting visitors to uncover the history of a castle that has watched over the town and silently observed the region’s development for centuries.
